You can Back a selection. When placing a back bet, you are betting for an outcome to happen. You may also choose to Lay. When placing a lay bet, you are betting for an outcome not to happen.
Lay betting is more associated with exchange betting as opposed to traditional bookmakers. In a lay bet, you are effectively betting on something not to happen, as opposed to a back bet, where you bet on something to happen. When you place a lay bet, you are effectively acting as the bookmaker, offering odds to other bettors.
For example, if you lay a bet on a horse to win a race, you will win if that horse does not win. You collect the back bettor's stake. If the horse wins, you have to pay the winning amount calculated by the odds you offered.
Commission is the fee Smarkets charges to facilitate peer-to-peer betting on the exchange. The Standard rate of commission is 2% on net winnings for any given market. If you make a net loss on a market, you do not pay commission.
There are two further tiers:
- 1% Pro Tier - Anyone who places more than 1500 bets or stakes more than £1m in a calendar month will have to opt in to the Pro Tier to continue trading on Smarkets.
- 3% Select Tier - which is applied to a very small number of the most profitable Smarkets users who exceed £25,000 in net profit over the previous 12 calendar months.
