Champions League

The 2026/27 Champions League is underway, and already looks wide open. Barcelona lead the league phase, with Arsenal alongside them on maximum points. Paris Saint-Germain look to continue their defence of the trophy they retained in Budapest last year. The competition ends at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June 2027, the second time Atletico’s ground has staged the final after 2019.

The list of genuine contenders is as long as it has been for years. PSG remain the side to beat and have the squad depth to go again, while Arsenal will feel this is unfinished business after losing on penalties in their first final. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both started with goals galore, Real Madrid are never far away, and Manchester City arrive under Enzo Maresca with a perfect domestic record behind them.

Champions League Structure

The Champions League expanded from 32 teams to 36 a couple of years ago, when the long-standing group stage was replaced by a single league phase.

All 36 teams are now ranked in one table. Each plays eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. To determine those fixtures, the teams are split into four seeding pots, with each club drawn against two sides from every pot. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw, as before.

Once the league phase concludes, the top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16. Those finishing from ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout phase play-off, with the eight winners joining the top eight in the last 16. Teams ranked 25th or below are eliminated outright, with no drop into the Europa League.

This season the league phase runs from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027, with the knockout rounds following in February and the final at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June 2027.

National Performance

Since the tournament began in 1955, 22 teams have won the European Cup or Champions League. 12 of these have won on multiple occasions. Real Madrid are the most successful team, having won 15 times and been runners-up in 4 other years. The winners of the cup have come from 10 nations. The most successful nation in the tournament is Spain with 20 wins, followed by England with 15 wins. England is also the country that has provided the highest number of winning clubs and the highest number of finalists, 6 and 10, respectively.

The final has involved 2 teams from the same country on 8 occasions. Since 1992 the record for making it to consecutive finals is held jointly by 2 teams, Milan and Juventus, with 3 finals each. PSG can equal that if they reach the final this season.

Real Madrid and PSG are the only teams in the UEFA Champions League era to defend their title successfully.
