The NBA was originally founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) before merging with the National Basketball League in 1949 and renaming itself as the National Basketball Association.

As the premier men's professional basketball league in the world, the NBA is currently made up of 30 teams - 29 from the United States and one from Canada. Their players are among some of the best-paid athletes in all of sport, with a soft salary cap in place to ensure that leagues can pay players above the cap, but also see reduced privileges in free agency.

There are two conferences (Eastern and Western) made up of 15 teams, as well as six divisions (Atlantic, Central, Southeast, Northwest, Pacific and Southwest).

Season Structure

The regular season runs from October to April, with each of the 30 teams playing 82 games, half at home and half away.

At the end of the regular season, the top 8 teams from each conference compete for the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy in the playoffs.

Each team plays a best-of-7 series against another team, with the first team to win 4 games advancing to the next round until all but one team from each conference remains.

These final two teams will play a best-of-7 series known as the NBA Finals in June.

Team Performance

The Boston Celtics are the most successful franchise in NBA history with 18 championships, closely followed by the Los Angeles Lakers, who sit with 17 titles.

There are 5 teams currently in the NBA with no finals appearances: the Los Angeles Clippers (54 seasons), Minnesota Timberwolves (35 seasons), Charlotte Hornets (34 seasons), Memphis Grizzlies (29 seasons) and New Orleans Pelicans (22 seasons).

Betting on NBA

The most common bets on the NBA are Money Line, Points Totals and Spreads. There are also NBA-specific markets available such as Player Rebounds or Player Assists.

If you prefer to bet on futures markets, then betting on Divisional or Conference winners is popular as well as the over NBA Championship winner.

Betting on the NBA can be difficult as upsets are frequent, but this does mean that bets on the underdog in a game could be profitable.

How to Watch

In the United States games are televised nationally on ESPN, ABC, TNT, and NBA TV and can be streamed through their respective apps. You can also purchase an NBA League Pass. This allows you to access all games from NBA TV and any not showing on broadcast television as well as a number of other features.

There are also some streaming services that offer access to all broadcast NBA games. Sling TV, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo TV all have options that will allow you to view games from all 4 broadcasters.

In Canada, NBA games are shown on Sportsnet, TSN or NBA TV.

In the UK, NBA games can be watched on TNT Sports.
