Leeds secured promotion from the Championship on Easter Monday, so the club has had some time to get used to the thought that they are playing in the Premier League next season. With that being said, former Leeds player Lee Sharpe urges the club to recruit well if they want to stay in the Premier League.
The Yorkshire club won the Championship and crossed the magical 100 points mark in the process, but looking from the outside, it still looks like a very tough task to avoid relegation.
Last season, all three promoted teams ended up getting relegated, but former Leeds winger Lee Sharpe believes his ex-club can avoid that fate if they recruit wisely.
The Englishman shared his thoughts on Leeds, just as he expressed his excitement about having them back in the top flight.
Lee Sharpe reckons that Leeds could quite quickly become a Premier League darling just like they were last time they played in the best league in England; however, he makes it clear that they need to recruit well and keep their best players.
“Last season was unbelievable. There were great scenes at Elland Road after winning the title. I had mates there with videos. It was pandemonium. It was so loud, it was brilliant. Leeds are expected to be in the Premier League.”
“The last time they came up they were a breath of fresh air and everyone’s favourite second team. The into throng that killed them was a lack of depth and rotation. If they recruit well they’ve got as good a chance as anyone of staying up because no one will want to go to Elland Road.”
Two of the biggest stars last season in the Championship were Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo, but Solomon is still under contract with Spurs and is expected to make a real push in the first team.
However, Lee Sharpe makes it clear that The Whites should do what they can to keep both him and Junior Firpo, who has been linked with a move away, just as he also hopes the club can bring in some reinforcements.
“Both are the sort of players Leeds need in the Premier League. Pacy, powerful with great feet and Leeds need those two and more of the same if they’re going to stand a chance. The levels are so high and Leeds will need them both and more.”
