Arsenal couldn’t get the better of title holders Liverpool this past weekend as an incredible Domonik Szoboszlai free kick proved to be the difference maker in a game where both sides struggled to create meaningful chances.
While the loss is obviously not ideal for Arsenal’s league campaign, former star Lauren has praised their squad depth and also stated that they should go on to win the Premier League this season.
Arsenal’s past title charges have failed due to multiple factors, chief among them being injuries to key players and the lack of suitable options on the bench. Under new sporting director Andrea Berta, the Gunners have made eight signings this summer, and Lauren believes this is the most balanced side he’s seen in a long time. He also praises Cristhian Mosquera and sees him challenging William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes for a spot in the starting XI.
“The squad this season is the most balanced I have seen under Arteta. We have two good players at every position. Mosquera is going to challenge Saliba and Gabriel.”
“It is the same for every position. Goalkeeper, fullbacks, midfield.”
While squad depth is great, it can bring about discontentment among players, but Lauren doesn’t see that happening. On the contrary, he believes that the increased competitiveness will only serve to help the club.
"Arsenal's squad depth is not going to be a problem because within the team, you know that everyone's a top player. Arsenal need the best players inside the dressing room."
"It will increase the competitiveness in the squad. David Raya knows that if he doesn't play, Kepa is right there, he's a top player who's waiting for his chance to play. In the middle of the park, if Zubimendi is not at his best, you know Merino is there. Declan Rice knows Christian Nørgaard is there. On the flanks, it's like that too."
"I always have had faith in the club and in the team and I believe we have the most balanced squad this season, at every position."
"Playing time is not going to be a problem as the likes of Trossard, Martinelli, they know they have to give 110 percent otherwise you won't be in the team. That is fantastic."
Lauren also says that with this depth, the onus is on Arteta and the squad to win the Premier League title.
“Now, it depends on how Arteta wants to set up the team, but it is definitely the most balanced team I have seen for many years.”
"Winning the Premier League, that should be the target. We've got all the ingredients to do that."

While Arsenal have strengthened across the board, the Eberechi Eze transfer resonated the most with fans considering his history with the club, and the fact that Arsenal hijacked a deal that Tottenham were working on.
Lauren warns Eze that he will be under greater pressure than he ever was at Crystal Palace, but backs him to come good and adds that he possesses the ability to create something out of nothing.
“It is too early to say if Arsenal have the upper hand in the title race because of Eze. We have to wait. Don´t rush the situation, but Eze is a fantastic player and he did amazingly at Crystal Palace, but now we have to see him at a bigger stage with bigger pressure.”
“Eze is an Arsenal boy. He loves the club. When you have the emotional connection and the quality as well, that makes a big difference.”
“He knows that even if he isn´t performing well, he is confident that this is his family and will work even harder. He will give more than 100%, and he is a fantastic player. I can’t wait to see him at Arsenal.”
“Arsenal needs a player like him who can create something out of nothing. This boy can make the difference, and I don't think he will have any problems performing.”
Lauren also praises the club hierarchy for blending Hale End products with experienced stars, as he sees it as a core part of the club’s identity.
“This is Arsenal, and we have always had youth products coming through. They know what the club means to the fans, and this is our club. We are mixing players from the academy and players from abroad.”
“When you see Max Dowman with his determination to go on and attack the defender. This is what you are looking for, and they have Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri as well.”
“I love to see those young players who have always been at Arsenal doing well.”
Arsenal legend Tony Adams was in the news recently, urging the Gunners to make Declan Rice the team captain as he doesn’t think the club can win things with Ødegaard leading the squad.
Lauren has criticised those claims, calling them nonsense. He backs Ødegaard as the team’s leader and says that a captain doesn’t win the league, the entire team does and that every player has to pull their weight.
"First of all I believe that Ødegaard has to handle all the criticism. It's part of the game and if you can't handle it, it increases the pressure, and you struggle to play for a big team."
"We need Ødegaard in the long term as we're in four competitions. The target should be, in my opinion, to win the Premier League. To be able to do that you need Ødegaard."
"Last season we lost creativity when he wasn't there. When he came back, it's not always easy to perform in the same way when you're back from an injury. He wasn't as brilliant as he was in the 23-24 season. He's a player that you need to win the Premier League and compete in all the other competitions, no doubt."
"When you see Arteta, he's a phenomenal coach who sees all the small details, knows the players and when he makes the decision to have Ødegaard as captain, it's because he knows he's the right man."
"I get your point as I heard some ex-player talking about if Ødegaard is not the captain, Arsenal will not win the league. This is nonsense. It's nonsense because the captain is not the one winning the league."
"You win the league by having the best players in the last third, you have a strong XI and a strong bench with players who can come on and make the difference. This is how you win the league, when you have 22-23 top players making the difference, week in week out. It's not the captain. He is also an addition. You need 22 captains. You have to be the best player in your position. The goalkeeper, the left-back, the midfielder, the striker, they're all captains and then they help their team to win, not just one person."
