With the Premier League season nearing its conclusion, the transfer market is already beginning to heat up. In anticipation of a busy summer, we caught up with transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, who offered exclusive insight into the futures of several high-profile players, including Rodrygo, Milos Kerkez and Sandro Tonali.
Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has been strongly linked to Arsenal, but the Gunners are also tracking Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. According to Di Marzio, Arsenal have made initial contact with Madrid, but any potential deal hinges on Xabi Alonso’s plans.
“It is true that Arsenal has initiated talks with Real Madrid to see if they’re willing to let go of Rodrygo,” he said. “It depends on Alonso. If he sees Rodrygo as part of his system or if he prefers Nico Williams, who Real Madrid are also interested in. If Nico arrives, Rodrygo may go. But if they don’t get another winger, I think it’ll be difficult for Alonso to green-light Rodrygo’s departure.”
Another factor is Rodrygo’s standing with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. “He’s one of Perez’s favourite players,” Di Marzio noted. “And when Perez likes a player, it’s very difficult for them to leave.”
Given his wages and valuation, only top Premier League clubs are viable destinations. “Arsenal or Manchester City are the only real options. But City aren’t likely to move, Guardiola wants a smaller squad.”
Manchester City and Liverpool are both monitoring Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. As Di Marzio sees it, Liverpool may be ahead in the race.
“For Liverpool, I think they will get Frimpong and Kerkez,” he said. “Last year, they only signed Chiesa, but this year they clearly know what they want.”
After a turbulent start to life in the Premier League marred by a betting ban, Sandro Tonali has found his feet at Newcastle, forming a dominant midfield trio with Joelinton and Bruno Guimarães. Despite interest from Italy and Spain, Di Marzio believes he’s staying on Tyneside.
“His agents were in Newcastle recently to discuss his future and whether a move was possible,” he explained. “But the club said no—he’s not for sale. They want him to stay and show what he can do over a full season.”
While Tonali is set to remain, Di Marzio hinted that striker Alexander Isak’s future may lie elsewhere. “I think Tonali, instead of Isak, will stay at Newcastle.”
Alejandro Garnacho was left out of Manchester United’s starting XI against Tottenham, featuring only in the final two minutes. His frustration was clear in post-match interviews with Argentinian media. Di Marzio revealed the 19-year-old has already attracted serious interest.
“In January, Napoli and Chelsea both tried to sign Garnacho, but United wanted €60 million,” he said. “Depending on the offers that come in, Napoli and Chelsea might try again. If Maresca stays at Chelsea, he may prefer Garnacho or Adeyemi.”
With the FIFA Club World Cup looming, several clubs are expected to strengthen their squads. Manchester City are already planning ahead, with Di Marzio reporting interest in Flamengo defender Wesley.
“City want Wesley for the Club World Cup,” he confirmed.
