As Arsenal continue to thrive this great season sitting on top of the Premier League table, we spoke to former Arsenal midfielder Denilson, who shared his thoughts on the Gunners and their Brazilian players.
Denilson played more than 150 games for Arsenal between 2006-2013 and the Brazilian is still following his former club intensively. In an interview with AceOdds, he shares his excitement for the form Arsenal are in and who is impressing him the most. He picks out Martinelli, who he thinks very highly of.
Denilson says that he is confident that Arsenal will win the Premier League - a title they haven`t won for over 20 years.
“Arsenal are doing very well, aren`t they? For several years now they've been among the top teams, but unfortunately, Manchester City and Liverpool have always won the title. I believe this is thanks to Arteta's work. It's excellent work.”
“I believe Arsenal will win the Premier League title this year, and it's a competition the team hasn't won since 2004. So I'm confident they will take this title. I'm rooting for them as much as possible.”
He also believes that Arsenal will be competing for the Champions League trophy.
“In the Champions League, they will also be one of the clubs fighting among the top teams. I can't say for sure like I can in the Premier League because there are other great clubs in the competition, but Arsenal will also be among the top teams.”
The Brazilian says that Arsenal do not have any weaknesses, however injuries are still a risk for the Gunners.
“I believe the team doesn't have any weaknesses. What can hinder them is injuries. Team itself has great players, a great squad. Every year it gets stronger.”
“So, in my opinion, the only threat is if players start getting injured and are unable to play. This could lead to Arsenal not achieving good results. If they continue as they are now, especially with the return of Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal will be fighting for titles this season.”
When speaking to Denilson, there is no doubt that he is still passionate about his former team and his fellow countrymen.
“When I arrived at Arsenal, Gilberto Silva and Júlio Baptista were already there. Then, Eduardo da Silva, who is a naturalized Croatian, arrived. Unfortunately, during my time there, we didn't win any titles. We reached some finals and unfortunately lost. I'm very happy with the Brazilians who are there, doing an excellent job, winning titles, and I hope they win many more. Especially the Premier League and the Champions League, right?”
“May Arsenal have great performances from Martinelli and Magalhães. And now, with the return of Gabriel Jesus, the Brazilians will end up helping the team even more to achieve its goals. I will always be here cheering for the Brazilians and for Arsenal.”
Martinelli got his breakthrough very early at Arsenal, but this season the winger has not been a regular starter as the competition is very tough at Arsenal, but Denilson believes Martinelli soon will regain his position as a starter.
“Martinelli is a high-quality player. He is helping the club a lot. I believe he has a lot of room to grow. Logically, there are several players in his position, and the competition there is healthy, right? It's very high. It requires a lot of intensity, a good head on your shoulders too.”
“Regardless of whether he's a luxury substitute today, I believe he'll soon be among the starting eleven to help the team. The most important thing is that he's in the squad and, when he comes on, he's playing great games.”
“A starting position takes time. I trust he'll return to his best form, his best technical condition. He's also a technically gifted player, a fast player. He'll soon regain his place.”
Arsenal take on their arch-rivals this Sunday at the Emirates Stadium. Tottenham Hotspur have been much better away from home this season, but Arsenal have been the stand out team this season with a four-point lead at the top of the table. Despite Tottenham's away form, they are 7/1 to win while Arsenal are 2/5. The value is on Spurs but if you are an Arsenal fan like Denilson, Martinelli to come on and score is 12/5.
