“Arsenal can win the treble”, says Anders Limpar

Arsenal have finished second in the league three seasons in a row, but being second is often described as being the first loser. With that in mind, the club has been criticised for not winning any major trophies despite being close to doing so every season. We talked to former Arsenal star Anders Limpar, who describes the criticism towards the club as outrageous.

After some years not being a real contender for the big titles, Arsenal have been very close to finally filling out the trophy cabinet with a major trophy, but every season they have stumbled across the finish line.

In a football landscape where criticism is never too far away, both the club and Mikel Arteta have come under fire for ‘choking’ towards the end of the campaign. Limpar, though, finds that to be a bit unreasonable.

“It´s outrageous - Arteta is among the best managers in the world”

Limpar makes it clear that he doesn't understand the criticism, and in his opinion, it is simply impossible to go after Arsenal and Arteta for what they have achieved.

“It is outrageous that Arsenal have been criticised for not winning trophies, because if you come second in the Premier League a couple of seasons in a row and reach a semifinal in the Champions League and have won the FA Cup a couple of times, then it´s impossible to criticise. You just can´t do it.”

“The media says they should win a big title, but look at all the big clubs. For them, there is 5-10 years between a league title, and if you have to criticise, you have to criticise the players as well.”

Limpar adds that he has 100% faith in Arteta and Arsenal's squad.

“In my opinion, Arteta is up there among the best managers in the world for what he has done for Arsenal, but I hope for him that he can win a couple of trophies this season.”

“A Premier League title or a Champions League final would be unbelievable, and I have 100% faith in Arteta and he has an amazing squad now.”

Limpar even believes Arsenal could go on and win the treble this season, while he claims that the current Arsenal team is the best since the squad that went unbeaten through the Premier League in 2003/04.

“If you look at the whole team sheet, they have an amazing team. I mean, come on, they can win the treble next year with a team like this.”

“They definitely have one of the best teams if everything goes well, because the squad is truly unbelievable. It´s mindblowing. All of those players could play for any team in England.”

“This is the best Arsenal team since The Invincibles. Arsenal were really good in the 90’s but we now have a dream team again. They now need to win trophies but they’re not far from winning due to the players at the club.”
