NFL Competition Format

The NFL is structured with 32 teams, divided into the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference comprises four divisions, and every team plays 17 games in a regular season.

The NFL season is structured with a three-week preseason and an 18-week regular season. After the regular season, the playoffs feature 14 teams, seven from each conference, competing for the Super Bowl title. There are three knockout rounds leading to the conference championships, and finally, the Super Bowl. The winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Each player on the winning team, coaches, and other staff are also awarded Super Bowl rings to commemorate their victory.

Previous Winners

The reigning world champions are the Philadelphia Eagles, who dominated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 at Super Bowl LIX. In doing so, they captured their 2nd title.

The Patriots are also the team with the most Super Bowl appearances. They have appeared 11 times in total, with 9 of those appearances in the 18 seasons between 2001 and 2018. Following the Patriots, the top teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, with 8 appearances each. Respectively, their most recent appearances were in 2010, 2023 and 1995.

There are 4 teams to have at least 3 consecutive Super Bowl appearances, most recently the Chiefs for 2023, 2024 and 2025. Buffalo Bills have the most consecutive appearances, with 4 from 1990-93, and the Miami Dolphins have 3 consecutive appearances from 1971-73.

NFL - A Brief History

The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of American Football Competition in the United States and the World. Established in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA), it was renamed the NFL in 1922.

In 1967, the Super Bowl happened for the first time, following the merger of the NFL with the rival AFL (American Football League). The merger was completed in 1970, and the Super Bowl remains the culmination of the season to decide the champion from the best teams of each league.
