The NHL is considered the top ranked professional Ice Hockey league in the world and it is the 5th wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue.

The league was organised to replace the National Hockey Association in 1917 and began with just 4 teams in Canada. In 1924 it expanded into the USA and now consists of 32 teams, 25 in the USA and 7 in Canada.

The league is divided into an Eastern and Western Conference, each containing 2 divisions.

Season Structure

The NHL regular season runs from September to April with the pre-season taking place in September and the Stanley Cup playoffs running from April to June.

Starting with the 2026-27 season, each team plays 84 games in the regular season, half at home and half on the road. 2 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for losing in overtime or a shootout and 0 points for a loss in regular time.

At the end of the regular season the team with the most points is awarded the Presidents' Trophy. The Stanley Cup playoffs occur post-season from April to June, with 8 teams from each Conference participating.The final 2 Conference champions play in the Stanley Cup Final to decide the overall winner.

Team Performance

Up to the 2025/26 season, 27 teams have won the cup, and 22 of these are still active in the NHL. The best-performing team in the NHL is the Montreal Canadiens, with 24 Stanley Cup wins and 35 final appearances.

The current cup holders are the Carolina Hurricanes, who defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to win the 2026 Stanley Cup, capturing their first championship in 20 years.

Betting on the NHL

Betting on the NHL isn't as popular as on some other sports but it's still a great game to bet on. Placing a simple Moneyline bet on the outcome of a game is the easiest bet to place, but for the more adventurous, you can place Puck Line or Goal Totals bets. You can also place Player or Team Prop bets on events such as first team to score, assists or goals saved. Live betting is also possible.

Futures bets can also be placed on the NHL. You can bet on teams to win their division or conference, League MVP or the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup.

How to Watch

In the United States, you watch national NHL games on ESPN, ABC, TNT, and TBS.Streaming is available on ESPN+, Hulu, the ESPN app, and Max. In Canada, Rogers holds the primary national rights through a new 12-year deal starting in 2026-27, with English-language broadcasts on Sportsnet and CBC, French-language coverage on TVA Sports and RDS, and select exclusive games on Amazon Prime Video. Canadian streaming is primarily available through Sportsnet+ and the networks' respective apps.

Regional games for fans in the local market are shown on Regional Sports Networks (RSNs), local over-the-air broadcast stations (such as Scripps Sports), or dedicated local streaming partnerships (like Amazon Prime Video for several U.S. teams starting in 2026). Outside the local market, out-of-market games in the U.S. are streamed on NHL Power Play on ESPN+. In the US, selected games will also continue to be shown on NHL Network.
