US - Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer is the highest level of men's soccer in the United States, sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. It is the latest in a series of men's premier professional national soccer leagues across the US and Canada and was formed in 1993 as part of the successful bid by the US to host the 1994 World Cup.

Unlike most soccer leagues, the MLS has a fixed membership and does not use a relegation and promotion structure. Teams in the MLS are not owned independently, but by the league and are operated by the league's investors.

In its first few seasons, the MLS was not a financial success, losing an estimated $250 million in its first 5 years. However, the introduction of stadiums specifically designed for soccer, national TV contracts and the Designated Player Rule, which allows teams to sign up to 3 players outside of their salary cap, means that the league has become profitable.

In 2023, a $2.5 billion 10-year deal was signed with Apple TV making them the primary global broadcaster for the MLS. All games are streamed through the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

League Structure

Like other sports leagues in the US and Canada, the MLS has a fixed membership. It currently comprises 30 teams, 27 in the US and 3 in Canada, divided into Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 2 games, home and away, against teams in their conference and 1 game against most teams in the other conference.

The regular season runs from late February or early March through to October, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points is awarded the Supporters' Shield. They also receive a home game advantage for the play-offs in October. The final MLS Cup championship game takes place in early November.

Team Performance

As of the 2023 season, 33 teams have played in the MLS since its inception. 15 teams have won at least one MLS Cup.

LA Galaxy has the best record, having won 6 MLS Cups and 4 Supporters' Shields. D.C United closely follows them with 4 Cups and 4 Shields. The current holders of the MLS Cup are LA Galaxy, who defeated New York Red Bulls 2-1 in the MLS Cup Final to claim the 2024 crown.

Winning the Supporters' Shield is not a guarantee of winning the Cup. Only 8 times in 28 seasons up to 2023 have the Shield and Cup gone to the same team. Two teams have achieved this twice, LA Galaxy, in 2002 and 2011 and D.C. United in 1997 and 1999.

7 teams have won the Supporters Shield whilst never winning an MLS Cup, including the 2024 winners Inter Miami. The New York Red Bulls have won the Shield 3 times in 2012, 2015 and 2018 without ever winning the Cup. There are also 6 teams with MLS Cup wins who have never been awarded the Supporters' Shield.

Betting on Major League Soccer

On Major League Soccer, you can place a three-way Moneyline bet on a team to win, lose or draw a particular match. You can also place bets on specific match outcomes, such as an Over/Under Bet on the score of both teams combined or a Spread Bet where you place your bet based on the goal range you think a team would win or lose by, for example, a spread of -1.5/+1.5 would mean the favourite team would have to win by 2 goals or more, while the underdog only needs to lose by no more than 1 goal. It's also possible to place Parlay bets or Prop bets on particular events occurring during a match.

When placing Future Bets on the MLS, the most popular market is the overall winner of the MLS Cup. It is also possible to place Future Bets on which teams will qualify for the play-offs, which Player will win the Golden Boot given to the top goalscorer in a season and the season MVP.

How to Watch

As of the 2025 season, all MLS games can be watched via a subscription to the MLS Season Pass which is available on Apple TV. Selected games are also available to watch in the United States on FOX.

In addition to the MLS Season Pass fans in Canada can also watch 68 games each season on TSN and RDS.
