US - Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer (MLS) is the highest level of men's soccer in the United States and Canada, sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation.

Formed in 1993 as part of the successful bid by the US to host the 1994 World Cup, the league has grown significantly over the decades and expanded to 30 teams with the addition of San Diego FC for the 2025 season.

Unlike most global soccer leagues, MLS operates with a fixed membership and does not use a relegation and promotion structure. Teams are not owned independently but by the league itself, and they are operated by the league's investors. In a major structural shift, the league is also preparing to transition to a European-style fall-to-spring calendar starting with the 2027-28 campaign, which will be preceded by an abbreviated "Sprint Season" in early 2027.

While MLS struggled financially in its early years, losing an estimated $250 million in its first five seasons, the introduction of soccer-specific stadiums, national TV contracts, and the Designated Player Rule transformed its fortunes.

Broadcasting rights took another massive leap forward when the league signed a 10-year deal with Apple in 2023. Following a restructuring of that agreement, the standalone MLS Season Pass was discontinued for the 2026 season, and all MLS matches are now included globally at no additional cost within a standard Apple TV subscription.

League Structure

Like other major sports leagues in the US and Canada, MLS operates with a fixed membership. It currently features 30 teams, 27 in the US and 3 in Canada, divided equally into 15-team Eastern and Western Conferences. During the 34-game regular season, teams play two matches (home and away) against every intraconference opponent, plus select matches against teams from the opposing conference.

For the 2026 campaign, the regular season runs from late February through to early November, concluding with Decision Day on November 7. At the end of the regular season, the team with the best overall record is awarded the Supporters' Shield, guaranteeing them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The expanded postseason begins with Wild Card matches in mid-November and culminates in the MLS Cup championship game on December 18. This will be the final MLS Cup played in December before the league transitions to a European-style fall-to-spring schedule in 2027.

Team Performance

As of the 2026 season, 34 teams have played in Major League Soccer since its inception. 16 teams have won at least one MLS Cup.

LA Galaxy has the best record, having won 6 MLS Cups and 4 Supporters' Shields. D.C. United closely follows them with 4 Cups and 4 Shields. The current holders of the MLS Cup are Inter Miami CF, who defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1 in the MLS Cup Final to claim the 2025 crown.

Winning the Supporters' Shield is not a guarantee of winning the Cup. Only 8 times in 30 seasons up to 2025 have the Shield and Cup gone to the same team. Two teams have achieved this twice: LA Galaxy in 2002 and 2011, and D.C. United in 1997 and 1999.

Several teams have won the Supporters' Shield whilst never winning an MLS Cup, including the 2025 winners Philadelphia Union. The New York Red Bulls have won the Shield 3 times in 2013, 2015, and 2018 without ever winning the Cup. There are also multiple teams with MLS Cup wins who have never been awarded the Supporters' Shield.

Betting on Major League Soccer

On Major League Soccer, you can place a three-way Moneyline bet on a team to win, lose or draw a particular match. You can also place bets on specific match outcomes, such as an Over/Under Bet on the score of both teams combined or a Spread Bet where you place your bet based on the goal range you think a team would win or lose by, for example, a spread of -1.5/+1.5 would mean the favourite team would have to win by 2 goals or more, while the underdog only needs to lose by no more than 1 goal. It's also possible to place Parlay bets or Prop bets on particular events occurring during a match.

When placing Future Bets on the MLS, the most popular market is the overall winner of the MLS Cup. It is also possible to place Future Bets on which teams will qualify for the play-offs, which Player will win the Golden Boot given to the top goalscorer in a season and the season MVP.

How to Watch

As of the 2026 season, the standalone MLS Season Pass was discontinued, meaning all MLS games can now be watched globally as part of a standard Apple TV subscription. Selected matches also continue to be available on linear television in the United States through FOX and FS1.
