The Indian Super League (ISL)

The Indian Super League was created in 2013 to increase the exposure of Football within the country. The league initially had a season only 3 months long, with games played daily, similar to the structure of the Twenty20 Cricket Indian Premier League.

In 2017/18, the league expanded to 10 teams and extended its season to 6 months and gained approval from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The ISL is at the top of the Indian Football League system and has been sponsored by Hero MotoCorp since 2014.

League Structure

As of the 2023/24 season there are 12 teams playing in the ISL. The regular season runs from September or October to late February or early March. During the season, each team plays the other teams twice, once at home and once at their opponent's home ground, in a double round-robin format.

Teams receive 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 2 for a loss. At the end of the season, the team with the most points receives the League Winners Shield.

At the end of the regular season, the top 6 teams progress to the Play-Offs. Teams ranked third-through-sixth play a single-elimination match hosted at the higher-ranked team's venue. The two winners of those matches join the first and second-ranked teams in the semi-finals, which are played over two weeks. The winners of these two matches will then meet at the Final, where the winner is presented with the ISL cup.

Club Performance

In the 8 seasons since the league was formed, the ISL Cup has been won by 7 teams. As of the 2022/23 season, Atlético de Kolkata and Chennaiyin have each won the Cup twice in 2014 and 2016 and 2015 and 2017, respectively. Bengaluru, ATK, Mumbai City and Hyderabad each have 1 win.

Kerala Blasters and Chennaiyin share the record for most final appearances with 3 each, though Kerala Blasters have never taken home the Cup. Goa has 2 final appearances with no wins.

The current champions for the 2022/23 seasons are ATK Mohun Bagan, who beat the Bengaluru in the final to win their first title.

Betting on the ISL

When betting on the Indian Super League, there are a number of season-long outcomes to bet on. You can bet on which team will receive the League Winners Shield at the end of the regular season, as well as the winner of the ISL outright. You could also bet on the Hero of the League, a prize awarded to the best player across the board each season, not necessarily the one with the best stats.

If you prefer to place shorter terms bets, then the match-winner market is always a good bet. It pays to keep an eye on lower-ranked teams who may get longer odds but have an advantage because of the geographical location of their match or injury problems in a higher-ranked opponent. Other match markets are available such as correct score or over/under goals.

How to Watch

The official broadcast partners for the ISL in India are VH1 and Sports18, matches can also be live streamed on JioCinema.

Outside of India games can be watched on OneFootball.
