The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of American Football Competition in the United States and the World. Established in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA), it was renamed the NFL in 1922.

In 1967, the Superbowl happened for the first time, following the merger of the NFL with the rival AFL (American Football League). The merger was completed in 1970, and the Superbowl remains the culmination of the season to decide the champion from the best teams of each league.

The NFL has the highest attendance of any sports league globally and is the wealthiest league by revenue.

Competition Format

The NFL is structured with 32 teams, divided into the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference comprises four divisions, and every team plays 17 games in a regular season.

The NFL season is structured with a three-week preseason and an 18-week regular season. After the regular season, the playoffs feature 14 teams, seven from each conference, competing for the Super Bowl title. There are three knockout rounds leading to the conference championships and the final at the Super Bowl. The winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, and a new trophy is created each year by Tiffany & Co. so winning teams can retain their trophy. Each player on the winning team, coaches, and other staff are also awarded Super Bowl rings to commemorate their victory.

The current reigning champions at Superbowl LVIII are the Kansas City Chiefs, with their 6th Superbowl appearance and 4th win. The Chiefs have dominated since 2019 and in 2024 became the 8th team to manage consecutive Super Bowl wins, the first team since the Patriots won the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

The Patriots are also the team with the most Super Bowl appearances. They have appeared 11 times in total, with 9 of those appearances in the 18 seasons between 2001 and 2018. The next teams in Superbowl appearances are the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Franciso 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, with 8 appearances each. Respectively, their most recent appearances were in 2010, 2023 and 1995.

There are 3 teams to have at least 3 consecutive Superbowl appearances, most recently the Patriots for 2016, 2017 and 2018. Buffalo Bills have the most consecutive appearances, with 4 from 1990-93, and the Miami Dolphins have 3 consecutive appearances from 1971-73.
